Calluna Events: Tell us how Maggie Evans Design started.
Maggie Evans Design: Creating my own design studio and working with brides has been a dream for so long! Maggie Evans Designs was launched after I finished my Master’s in Art Therapy. Upon starting graduate school, I imagined working with brides, designing dresses for them but doing it in a way that was much deeper, richer and memorable than the traditional bridal shop experience. In the beginning, I did everything including alterations and making veils. Now my company has become very stream-lined offering only design and custom experiences.

CE: What is your style? Where do you find inspiration?
MED: My style is feminine yet edgy. My dresses are very artistic, as I draw on my fine art background, including hand-dyeing, embroidery, beading, and lots of sculptural experimentation with fabric. My best work happens when I collaborate, either with other artists for styled shoots, or directly with a bride and her vision.

CE: What does “Modern Marie” mean to you? What do you recommend wearing to this event?
MED: “Modern Marie” means lots of lace, both modern and vintage, collaged together. I see lots of different types of silk to create a lot of texture for each gown. I am using vintage rhinestone trims combined with hand-painted details to create a dress for the star: Heather Dwight! If you plan to join Calluna in their celebration, I’d say experiment with layers! Try lots of different lace designs together in one color family, or lots of light and airy fabrics together.

CE: What is your relationship with Calluna?
MED: I met Heather for the first time about 10 years ago when I first moved to Boulder. I had come from Seattle where I was sewing wedding dresses for a local shop. I wanted to continue my work so I signed up for the Boulder Wedding Show, where I had a booth right next to Heather, who was working for another company. Graduate school took over and I didn’t get back into the wedding scene until three years ago at which point I reconnected with Heather. Watching her grow her amazing business over these last several years has been super inspiring. I really admire the elegance and class that Heather brings to her work.

“I believe that we women in love are aching to express those deep down feelings and make them tangible during this process of transition, ie. planning a wedding. My job is to help bring that raw emotion to the surface and transform it into a real, gorgeous piece of art for the bride to wear. The dress becomes a symbol for this inner discovery and transformation as she crosses the threshold into marriage.”
