This week for Calluna Community, we caught up with Keelia of Helios Floral!

Cheers! Xo, Calluna

Describe what you do!

I am a floral designer, I’ve been in the industry for about 4 years and love it for so many reasons. My specialty within the floral realm is designing for weddings and special events. I get to meet wonderful and in-love couples who trust me to play a part in the transformation of their wedding venues with flowers. There have been countless times where I’ve stopped in the middle of whatever I’m doing and think “Wow, this is really my job! This is crazy!” I collaborate with other vendors to create really stunning spaces, we have such an amazing and creative group of wedding professionals in Colorado!

What is your idea of a dream project?

My idea of a dream project is having the opportunity to work with a group of vendors and a couple who totally believe in me and trust me. I love when couples come to me with a feeling or emotion and ask me to create designs that will make their guests feel the same way. I have some really awesome color palettes in the works for this years weddings and I cannot wait to experiment with that!

What has been your favorite wedding that you have worked, or attended?

I love all of my weddings, but I have to say my favorite was for Angela and Kyle at Milston Wells Farm. My clients completely trusted me and gave me a huge amount of creative freedom. On top of that, I was able source nearly 90% of the flowers from local farmers in the area. That time of year gives way to some of my favorite blooms and there were so many perfect choices for their color palette and vibe. I had the great pleasure of working with Calluna Events, Yonder House, Blackbelly Catering, and Alison Vagnini. This crew of talented vendors came together seamlessly and the whole event was so beautiful. To top it off it was so evident that our clients had the most amazing time and were over the moon with the work that we all brought to the table.

What does your morning routine look like?

I do not have a very strict routine in the mornings. No matter what the agenda, I start with a cup of tea. Some days I will wake up and get dressed in something that feels pretty, fun, and exciting and I’ll go to meet a client, or simply hang out at my favorite coffee shop to work on proposals. Other days I roll out of bed, throw on some sweatpants and tee shirt and go straight to my garden to get my hands in the dirt. My garden is a place where I can reflect, think things through, and feel inspired.

What are some of your favorite trends that you are seeing?

I have a few favorite trends at the moment, I’m loving the incorporation of fruits, detailed textures, colored candles, and making larger color statements with table settings.

What advice would you give to a younger you?

I feel like I would love advice from an older me! But if I were to give myself advice it would be to remain confident in your weird winding path and rest assured that there are successes and good things to come.

What makes you excited to go to work in the morning?

I pull myself out of bed because I get to create something that hasn’t been created before. I get to have my hands on stems, and work in vivid color. I get to work with the best group of flower friends, I always have the best time designing with them and watching everyone grow in their own directions and hone their brands and unique styles.

What is your favorite cocktail, or what are you drinking tonight?

My favorite “cocktail” is a spicy michelada!

Cocktails with Calluna: Project Floral

Here at Calluna we are always looking for new ways to highlight and honor some of the amazing creative partners we get to work with. We feel incredibly fortunate to work with some seriously talented vendors in the industry, and we are showing them off to you in our Calluna Community Series! We are sitting down with some of the fabulous vendors of Colorado to get to know about them, their business and what life is like behind the scenes.

This week for Calluna Community, we caught up with Lauren and Tristin of Project Floral!

Cheers! Xo, Calluna

Describe what you do!

Great Question! Describing what a florist does is a bit of a myth-busting experience. We are a full-service wedding floral company– what that means is that we custom design everything from our initial idea boards to the final product. We spend a lot of time meeting with our couples to discover what style of floral and decor will capture their celebration. During a typical summer week, we work Tuesday through midnight on Saturday preparing and delivering our designs. Flowers take a lot of preparation and care before we can start designing with them and all and after months of planning, days of handling flowers, and hours of set-up, we get to experience the best of our work: the moment of seeing a bride tear up when we give her the custom-made bouquet that she’s been dreaming of, or when a groom walks into the reception area so happy with the beauty that he gives us all hugs. These are the moments that bring us the excitement for the work we do!

What is your idea of a dream project?

My dream project is working with a couple to design a floral installation that combines alternative materials from the art world with fresh floral to create a one-of-a-kind “wow” moment that makes their event feel like a unique expression about who they are as a couple. I am deeply inspired by my art background and have a passion for sculptural elements; my dream project leans heavily on an artistic flair coming out. -Tristin

What has been your favorite wedding that you have worked, or attended?

My favorite weddings that I have been a part of have been those of family members because being all together with a large extended family who live all over the country is a rare and fun-filled opportunity!

My favorite wedding that I have worked at was at Moss Denver where we were able to install what looked like a hanging garden throughout one large room! It was incredible and the teamwork that went into it was absolutely beautiful! -Lauren

What does your morning routine look like?

Mornings are the best part of my day! I have two foster babies. Taking care of them takes most of my attention in the morning, so I aim to wake up about an hour before the little ones! I make tea, read, do a 20 minute yoga routine, and then start breakfast! -Lauren

What are some of your favorite trends that you are seeing?

We are loving the COLOR! I am also in love with the lush garden almost Victorian style of design, where each arrangement holds a variety of large lush floral in an asymmetric structure that gives off an almost spontaneous feel to it. -Lauren

What advice would you give to a younger you?

I would tell my younger self to not hold back because of fear. I started my business right out of art school and was intimidated by all of the professionals in my field that had more experience and more years and it took a long time to feel confident with knowing that I was worthy and that I could dream bigger. I would tell my younger-self to dream big and have so much grace for the process. -Tristin

What makes you excited to go to work in the morning?

Our team! Our employees are incredibly invested in improving the culture of our studio. We love meeting for morning coffee and starting the day checking in with one another. We love listening to hand-made playlists full of music that each of us enjoys, giving one another gifts, and writing notes of gratitude for one another.

What is your favorite cocktail, or what are you drinking tonight?

A Good Old Fashioned! -Tristin

As you all know, this lovely space will be hosting a handful of our favorites, including Cured, Cedar & Hyde, and the brand new Fawns Leap! We are so excited to see Tara from Fawns Leap take the jump with starting her own company. Calluna has had the pleasure of working alongside Tara in her other endeavors and she truly is a very talented florist. We thought it was imperative to sit town with Tara and get the inside scoop of what Fawns Leap is all about and what inspires her! Enjoy! xx, Calluna

What does the name mean?
Fawns Leap is a beautiful place in the Catskill Mountains where I spent time as a child. It’s a great cliff jumping spot next to a stunning waterfall.  The name reminds me of my early love of wild places and the thrill of gathering up your courage and going for it!
What’s the concept?
First and foremost, Fawns Leap is a flower shop in the classic sense. Fresh, gorgeous, ever-changing stems to choose from along with an excellent selection of specimen plants, beautifully designed vases and planters, vessels for illumination, and home goods created by American craftsman and artists.  Embracing a natural, elegant style, Fawns Leap botanical artistry seeks to connect us with our environment and each other.

Will customers be able to buy flowers from the store or will they be special order only? What about special events?
Absolutely, customers can expect a great selection of unusual blooms to choose from anytime they come into the shop!  We hope for people to be captivated by something new each time they visit Fawns Leap.
We love special events! We believe that gathering with family and friends to celebrate is one of the great joys of life.  Whether the event is life-changing or a special dinner at home, we love to collaborate with our customers to create the floral piece that fits their style perfectly.

How will the collaboration with Cured and Cedar + Hyde work?
The concept behind the collaboration is to expand the Mercantile that Cedar & Hyde established on the West End to include a fabulous gourmet deli and flower shop.  We are thrilled to be working along side two incredible companies to make 10th street a destination in Boulder.
What is your background?
I have been designing with flowers and plants professionally for over ten years, though the love for this medium began well before.  My mother and I had a floral design business when
I was in high school.  I’ve taken forays into other fields, but I always gravitate back to creating with botanical elements in some way.  I am thrilled to have the chance to share this great love with the community through my shop.
What are your favorite types of flower to work with?
I love to find the best blooms to suit the occasion. Some days it might be the combination of colors and textures that inspire or the elegant shape or spectacular quality of a particular bunch of blooms.
If you could have one flower in your house all the time what would it be?
Impossible to choose one! It’s the incredible variety of blooms changing with the seasons and fashions, that keeps me ever intrigued.
