Cocktails with Calluna: Project Floral

Here at Calluna we are always looking for new ways to highlight and honor some of the amazing creative partners we get to work with. We feel incredibly fortunate to work with some seriously talented vendors in the industry, and we are showing them off to you in our Calluna Community Series! We are sitting down with some of the fabulous vendors of Colorado to get to know about them, their business and what life is like behind the scenes.

This week for Calluna Community, we caught up with Lauren and Tristin of Project Floral!

Cheers! Xo, Calluna

Describe what you do!

Great Question! Describing what a florist does is a bit of a myth-busting experience. We are a full-service wedding floral company– what that means is that we custom design everything from our initial idea boards to the final product. We spend a lot of time meeting with our couples to discover what style of floral and decor will capture their celebration. During a typical summer week, we work Tuesday through midnight on Saturday preparing and delivering our designs. Flowers take a lot of preparation and care before we can start designing with them and all and after months of planning, days of handling flowers, and hours of set-up, we get to experience the best of our work: the moment of seeing a bride tear up when we give her the custom-made bouquet that she’s been dreaming of, or when a groom walks into the reception area so happy with the beauty that he gives us all hugs. These are the moments that bring us the excitement for the work we do!

What is your idea of a dream project?

My dream project is working with a couple to design a floral installation that combines alternative materials from the art world with fresh floral to create a one-of-a-kind “wow” moment that makes their event feel like a unique expression about who they are as a couple. I am deeply inspired by my art background and have a passion for sculptural elements; my dream project leans heavily on an artistic flair coming out. -Tristin

What has been your favorite wedding that you have worked, or attended?

My favorite weddings that I have been a part of have been those of family members because being all together with a large extended family who live all over the country is a rare and fun-filled opportunity!

My favorite wedding that I have worked at was at Moss Denver where we were able to install what looked like a hanging garden throughout one large room! It was incredible and the teamwork that went into it was absolutely beautiful! -Lauren

What does your morning routine look like?

Mornings are the best part of my day! I have two foster babies. Taking care of them takes most of my attention in the morning, so I aim to wake up about an hour before the little ones! I make tea, read, do a 20 minute yoga routine, and then start breakfast! -Lauren

What are some of your favorite trends that you are seeing?

We are loving the COLOR! I am also in love with the lush garden almost Victorian style of design, where each arrangement holds a variety of large lush floral in an asymmetric structure that gives off an almost spontaneous feel to it. -Lauren

What advice would you give to a younger you?

I would tell my younger self to not hold back because of fear. I started my business right out of art school and was intimidated by all of the professionals in my field that had more experience and more years and it took a long time to feel confident with knowing that I was worthy and that I could dream bigger. I would tell my younger-self to dream big and have so much grace for the process. -Tristin

What makes you excited to go to work in the morning?

Our team! Our employees are incredibly invested in improving the culture of our studio. We love meeting for morning coffee and starting the day checking in with one another. We love listening to hand-made playlists full of music that each of us enjoys, giving one another gifts, and writing notes of gratitude for one another.

What is your favorite cocktail, or what are you drinking tonight?

A Good Old Fashioned! -Tristin

Calluna Community: Cocktails with Velare Cinematography

Here at Calluna we are always looking for new ways to highlight and honor some of the amazing creative partners we get to work with. We feel incredibly fortunate to work with some seriously talented vendors in the industry, and we are showing them off to you in our Calluna Community Series! We are sitting down with some of the fabulous vendors of Colorado to get to know about them, their business and what life is like behind the scenes.

This week for Calluna Community, we caught up with Ben and team of the Velare wedding cinematography company!

Cheers! Xo, Calluna

Describe what you do!

I serve as the Creative Director at Velare, which means that I lead the vision for Velare to create wedding films that, in our minds, are a step away from what the industry expects.

What is your idea of a dream project?

For me, a dream project is one where we get to forge a real connection with our couples and get to collaborate with them on how to tell their story in a unique and genuine way. On top of that, we love travel, so it’s always a dream to get to explore the world as part of the job. Norway, Argentina, and New Zealand are at the top of my list of dream wedding locations.

What has been your favorite wedding that you have worked, or attended?

A personal favorite wedding of mine was one we filmed last year in Florence, Italy. Not only was the wedding incredible (a stunning private castle overlooking the city, an epic party, a spontaneous opera performance–the list goes on), but we got to spend so much time with the couple, and even met up a few days later in Venice to explore the canals and talk about life over some incredible coffee.

What does your morning routine look like?

I try to be as much of a morning person as possible, though that’s always so much harder in the winter when it’s still so dark in the mornings! But my routine involves cooking breakfast for my wife and sitting with her over a cup of coffee before getting fully ready for the day, then heading to the office. We are all such good friends as well as teammates, so we all spend the first part of our day in the office catching up with each other, especially about non-work related things. I also try to carve out time in the morning every day or two to have an hour of creative brainstorming time before jumping into whatever edits or other projects we have on our plates.

What are some of your favorite trends that you are seeing?

That’s a hard question. There are certainly so many trends with wedding filmmaking, because it’s still such a new medium and there are so many incredible filmmakers who continually push the boundaries of what a wedding film is. While it hasn’t taken off as much in video as it has in photo, I think the resurgence of actual film in general is something we all love and draw inspiration from. It’s been more popular in commercial formats rather than weddings, but there is something about the look of analog film that just can’t be replicated digitally, and it’s such a timeless, classic style–which are qualities that we try to root Velare in.

What advice would you give to a younger you?

I would tell my younger self to not worry about the likes and experiment for the sake of experimenting. It’s so easy in this age of social media to only create something that will gather likes and engagements, but it’s impossible to create and to learn under that sort of pressure. It’s far better to go out and create something that never gets shared than to avoid creating anything at all, because that’s the only way you can truly develop your style and hone your craft. That’s something that I’m still working on getting better at to this day.

What makes you excited to go to work in the morning?

Our team is like a family, and without it, this job would just not be the same. It’s because we’ve become such close friends over the years that we know how to support each other both personally and professionally, and we are able to bounce ideas off of each other and develop them as a team of equals.

What is your favorite cocktail, or what are you drinking tonight?

I’ve always been a classic Old Fashioned guy, but I’ve recently been discovering and experimenting with gin drinks. Probably the best cocktail I’ve had recently is a spin on a Hemingway Daiquiri, but substituting the rum with gin. The fresh grapefruit juice, paired with that smooth, pine-y flavor of the gin, is such a crisp and delicious combination.

Happy Thanksgiving from the #CallunaCrew

Happy Thanksgiving to our clients and community of friends in the wedding industry! We are so very grateful for your ongoing support. You make our jobs enjoyable and meaningful. THANK YOU! We wish you happiness, love, and yummy food this Thanksgiving.

Today the #CallunaCrew is sharing what we are grateful for, and we would love to hear from you, too! What are you thankful for on this Thanksgiving holiday?

Cheers! Xo, Calluna

Kristen :: “I am thankful for… The beautiful state of Colorado and my home in Denver. I am such a city girl but I love being surrounded by beautiful nature. I love seeing all the new and exciting things happening in the city too, it is a food and drink lovers paradise! I am so thankful for all of the amazing couples and vendors I was able to work with this past year. From an intimate museum wedding in the city to a 200 guest mountain soiree, I was really able to see and experience it all! Starting my new food + drink blog! Besides wedding planning, food, drinks and restaurants are a huge passion of mine. I am so excited that I finally took the plunge and launched the website! My super supportive family, even though they are over 1,000 miles away! My #callunasquad, no day is the same!”

Gabrielle :: “This year I’m so so thankful for my loving, supportive, encouraging and inspiring family, friends, and colleagues – old and new! I’m especially grateful for my amazing and patient husband, and his love and effort as we nurture our newish marriage and tackle the seemingly never ending home project list. For our fur baby, Seamus, and all the joy, fun, laughs, cuteness and craziness he’s brought into our lives. Finally, I’m thankful for everyday comforts: quiet nights at home, early morning run/walks, baking shows on Netflix, and gorgeous mountain views. Happy Thanksgiving!”

Jean :: “I am thankful for my best friend and husband of four years, Joe, and my overwhelmingly supportive family. I’m thankful to live in a city that has every season (especially autumn!) and provides an amazing culture. Lastly, I am incredibly thankful to have been welcomed so warmly into the Calluna Crew!”

Mel :: “Here we are again –– in preparation for another holiday season filled with thanks for what came before us and what’s ahead. As we turn the final pages of our calendar and share in reflection of all that we’ve accomplished, all that we’ve experienced, all that we’ve overcome –– I find myself filled with gratitude just to be a participant in it all.  Gratitude can sometimes feel big –– hard to articulate –– overwhelming to pin down. In moments like this, I find myself grateful for a chance to sit in the present and just live it. Grateful for an opportunity to play, to work, to grow, to thrive, to fail, to succeed, to be a friend, a loved one, a citizen, a human being. Grateful for full bellies, happy hearts, belly laughs, warm hugs, big dreams and wonder for the future. And I’m grateful to share it all with all of you. A very Happy Thanksgiving from my table to yours, friends!”

Haley :: “I am grateful for the love and support of family and friends, for good health, a beautiful home, and a fulfilling career. I don’t take for granted the opportunity to work alongside incredibly talented colleagues and creative partners and am honored to do something meaningful for my clients.”

Francesca :: “The last few months have been filled with major changes for me. That’s why I’m thankful for having so many wonderful, long-term, supportive relationships in my life to help make change easier. I’m forever thankful to my family and friends – which includes my caring Calluna family – for all the encouragement. I’m looking forward to new and expanding opportunities on the east coast with Calluna in 2019.”

Heather :: Each year as I sit down to write this for our annual Thanksgiving blog post I am humbled that we are able to be a part of the wonderful world of weddings and the extended wedding community.  I am forever grateful as we wrap up our 15th season in business, March 2019 officially marks 15 years in business!  I continue to be inspired by the Calluna Community – our clients who choose Calluna, the creative partners and venues we are fortunate to work so closely with and who continually entrust their clients with us. I am thankful to be able to go to work each day and do something I love and am passionate about. I am particularly grateful for our clients from this year. Witnessing your weddings is a great honor! This year brought some new incredible weddings and visions, where we were able to collaborate and be creative in ways we never have. I am grateful for our clients’ trust in us and our ability to constantly grown and expand our offerings.

I am forever grateful and humbled by our team.  They are the heart and soul of Calluna, my right hands, who work tirelessly and who have such positive enthusiasm for our couples. They allow me to focus on new and exciting projects for 2018 and are supporting us as we expand into new projects in 2019! I consider them all friends and love the impact they’ve had on my life and my business.

I am grateful for the love and support of my family and my friends, especially my husband, Brandon, our daughter Maggie and son Grey.

I’m also grateful that in the past year I traveled to so many international locations – Scotland, England (with my family) and Ireland, Costa Rica and Mexico (three times!) for work!

I’m grateful to live in such an incredible place as Boulder. For fresh air, sunshine, hikes in the mountains. I’m grateful for my health and any time I can ride my bike or do a little yoga.

Real Wedding :: Jess & Anthony’s intimate Breckenridge wedding

We love when our couples choose to do something a little out of the ordinary, but still focus on bringing their closest friends and loved ones to celebrate the day. Jess and Anthony embodied just that. From our initial phone call, I knew that Jess and Anthony’s wedding was going to be one to remember! They wanted to celebrate with their closet friends and family, and to do it in a way that was intimate. We decided on renting an amazing private residence in Breckenridge, CO. The Chateau of Breckenridge, which is managed by Paragon Lodging, was an incredible home nestled in the mountains. The selling point was the gorgeous rooftop patio that boasted insane views of the area. The morning was spent with Jess and her girls getting ready in the Chateau while enjoying mimosas. The atmosphere was relaxed, calm, and fun – and we love that!

When guests arrived, they were treated to champagne cocktails as they made their way to the rooftop patio for the ceremony. Being in the middle of October, we had planned for all kinds of weather, but luck was on our side! The weather could not have been more gorgeous! Jess was truly a vision in her amazing dress! There really wasn’t a dry eye in the house as Jess and Anthony said their vows beneath a gorgeous wooden arch and cascading greenery designed by Petal and Bean of Breckenridge. After the ceremony, guests remained on the rooftop for cocktails and small bites. A favorite among guests was the mini tomato soup shooters topped with small grilled cheese sandwiches!

After cocktails, guests headed downstairs to enjoy a pasta station prepared by Food Hedz. The decor was elegant and sweet, much like the couple! Guests sat at farm style tables adorned long garlands of greenery down the center, and place settings of birch chargers, slate gray plates and gold flatware. The many votives added such a warm ambiance to the already incredible dining area. After dinner, guests then headed back to the rooftop patio where toasts were made and dances were had! As always, DJ Jahsonic knows how to make a party! Jess added an absolutely stunning fur stole to her ensemble as the night moved on. Thank you so much, Jess and Anthony, for allowing us to be a part of your day! We wish you so much love!

Real Wedding :: Rebecca & Ethan’s Ranch Wedding

Our job is so wonderful for many reasons, but we especially love when our clients start to feel more like friends. Rebecca and Ethan were such a lovely couple and we were so grateful for the opportunity to plan their day. I love the story behind their inspiration! When Rebecca’s parents were married, they used the gift money to purchase an amazing Persian rug. That rug now sits in Rebecca and Ethan’s living room, and was the entire inspiration for their day – full of navy and marsala hues. Amazing!

The event took place at C Lazy U Ranch outside of Granby, CO. Rebecca and Ethan made their wedding a whole weekend affair! Guests flew in on Thursday to C Lazy U Ranch and participated in numerous ranch activities, karaoke on Thursday evening, and a welcome celebration on Friday evening before the festivities kicked off.

There were so many sweet, personal details to this wedding, that its hard to choose a favorite! Ethan is a comic book lover, and took on the task of designing their wedding programs.  Such a unique and fun idea!

Another homage to Ethan’s love of comics – the place card holders.  Each table was identified by a superhero Lego figurine. The base of the figurine had each guest’s name drawn on by Sophie with Sweet Zion Paperie.

Rebecca and Ethan said their “I Do’s” beneath a custom designed teepee overlooking an incredible valley of changing Aspen trees. There was not a dry eye in the house!img_3406

The ceremony site was called Woodsie and on the large arch that guests entered under, we hung giant, navy and gold R + E pinatas – a true of the couple’s fun and charismatic personalities.  There was truly not a detail forgotten.

Rebecca and her mother walked down an aisle that was lined with a gorgeous wheat display made by J. Gilbert Studios.  The florals were truly stunning, but not nearly as stunning as Rebecca in her strapless white gown, lace bolero, and navy stole. While they recessed down the aisle, guests tossed dried flower petals that came from Rebecca’s mother’s garden. Another sweet personal touch that we adored.

Guests were then treated to a cocktail hour up at Woodsie and after, took wagon rides down to the large site for the reception. Guests entered the gorgeous haybarn to rows of farm tables, a plethora of florals and giant, sparkly pinatas (one of our favorites!). Rebecca really spearheaded the design process and we loved how her choices really reflected her personality! Guests dined on a delicious family style meal and then satisfied their sweet tooth’s from the donut wall. The entire party was kicked off by The Hora done by The Radio band. One vendor said “I gage a wedding by the hora, and this is a GREAT wedding!” We adore you, Rebecca & Ethan. Here’s to you!
